I’ve been reviewing stats from MarketingSherpa’s latest Email Marketing Benchmark Guide. It’s easy to get distracted by all the people in social media saying that email is dead and a thing of the past, but this survey of all the movers and shakers in the industry says otherwise. And I agree, although no longer the darling, both email and 30 second spots do get in front of a lot of eyeballs.
I’ve also found it useful to compare my open rates and other stats against the rest of the world to see how things are doing overall.

Folks own great automobiles that get them from point A to point B, but they still buy new cars for that ‘new car smell’. I think (some) marketers are always trying to sell the next best thing or what they’re comfortable with instead of simply pushing for results.
Email is far from dead and most Email Service Providers still haven’t made the transition to complex, rules-based, transactional messaging with multi-medium interaction (e.g. SMS response to Email trigger to ….). As well, we still have a ways to go on user-selected throttling (Send me more/less emails).
And, of course, Email clients are well behind browsers on rendering multi-media.
We have only scratched the surface of leveraging email!
That’s a great point, I’m getting ready to roll out Manticore marketing automation over the next couple of months and I’m really looking forward to it.
