Perfect Fail

Along with the barn burning mayhem the lightning caused some trouble with the devices in the house too. Once I got the cable and internet back up it was time to give the PC a tune up. The first order of business was a backup so I created an image of the hard drive and went to bed as it ran.

The backup completed but when I went to turn the machine on the next day there was a loud clunking coming from the hard drive. I thought I had heard drive failure before, but nothing like this – it was like someone was tapping a screwdriver on a metal box. The good news was that I had a second hard drive in the machine for backups (a simple and inexpensive trick I highly recommend), so I went to the local best buy to get an enclosure, burned the image, and we were back in business without losing a beat.

The thing that kills me are the odds of a total drive failure 8 hours after doing a backup. The hard drive has a good 7 years of duty on it, yet allowed one final backup before giving up the ghost. If you haven’t done a backup lately, please do. Remember that there are only 2 kinds of people – those who have been through a catastrophic data loss, and those who will.

As an afterword, Staples has a 250GB “Marshmallow” drive that is USB powered, and a bit bigger than a deck of cards for only $99. You’ll thank me later.

Audio Explosion

So I have still been running around like crazy. The sales kickoff was last week and I’m also trying to get everything together for an event in Toronto, and vacation before that up in Northern Michigan.

I’d love to say that I haven’t been able to write in the blog because I’ve been so busy working on the Marketing Over Coffee book…. but that would be a lie. Everything else is eating up the time, including the last of the stuff I had to do to get over my lost cellphone, and a recall on my car that said the wheel may fall off.

That said, I did finally get a new Nano to replace the one that went through the wash, and that fits perfectly with the latest pile of audio that I have in progress and out:

There’s talk this week on the Beancast about Newsroom Neutrality, Tivo and 50 Cent defending his brand.

There’s a new M Show, although I have not yet unveiled my plans to close the show down on episode 200.

Marketing Over Coffee will be out Thursday with a 40 minute interview with David Meerman Scott.

Podcamp Boston 3 was a blast and I still have a ton of photos to upload to Flickr…

Roasting Scott Monty

Monty Roasters

Last Friday a group of Boston Professionals met to send Scott Monty off to Michigan for his new job with Ford. In the spirit of a classic roast, most of the jokes were at his expense or at Crayon’s (apologies in advance to the Crayonistas).

Please keep in mind this is explicit content, and not safe for work. Just to drive it home it opens with an F-bomb and a joke with no taste at all.

Here’s the audio program:

Intro: Scott Monty’s rotten Joke

01:18 John Wall lays downs the rules

02:04 The Roast begins

06:30 Len Edgerly steps up

Hanging with the Mad Man

“It’s all over for you Mickey…”

I have not vanished off the face of the earth (although my cellphone did in New York City this weekend, but that’s a tale for another day).

Lots of interesting stuff over the past couple of days. I’m putting the final touches on the audio for the Scott Monty roast from last week, which was a fantastic time. I was then off to New York City to catch both Avenue Q on Broadway and Ricky Gervais at Madison Square Garden. Both were great.

I also got to finally check out B&H Photo after 3 unsuccessful tries, but couldn’t buy anything because I blew my extra cash replacing my lost phone.  Plenty more going on with Podcamp Boston coming up this weekend, if you are going please send me a line and we can catch up over a cool beverage in what is supposed to be a very humid weekend.

Here’s today’s Marketing Over Coffee:

Surprise

Ok, I’m back. We were at a wedding in North Carolina for the past couple of days, that’s where this charming young lady saw a flashbulb for the first time. The trip home was an Oddessy through hell, but I’m not going to get into that right now. I’m off for a couple of days for the fourth, and am going to try and make it down to the River Charles for the fireworks, which I haven’t seen in more than 5 years.

Marketing and Economists

The latest Marketing Over Coffee is up for your listening pleasure:

I also found an interesting article on Harvard Economics. The author put forth some theories on why the major is so popular. As an Econ major this was my favorite point:

“A fourth explanation is that economics is a practical and marketable degree. Many economics graduates land starting salaries in six figures. Economics is good training for business school, law school, or a career in public policy. With the growth of health economics as a field, even some pre-meds sensibly consider our department. The list of successful people with economics backgrounds spans many walks of life: Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, Diane von Furstenberg, Warren Buffet, Donald Trump, Kofi Annan, Sandra Day O’Connor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Meg Whitman—even Gene Kelly, Mick Jagger, and Tiger Woods!”

Ronin Return

I’m back and throwing a punch this week for DYKC’s Friday Night Fights!

From Superman 676, this month. I’m very excited about next month, author James Robinson will be taking over the title and rumor is it’s for close to 2 years. If you’ve ever thought about reading a comic check out Robinson’s run on Starman, a fantastic story with some excellent characters including The Shade, one of the few literary characters I actually miss hearing about (c’mon, less than $5, how can you miss?)
